About this Event
Voices of L.A. is a new initiative of Delirium Musicum chamber orchestra that celebrates the rich and varied diversity of cultures and musical traditions present in L.A.’s communities. It features musicians and works from both western classical and traditional ethnic music repertoires, and premieres newly-written compositions that marry western orchestral instruments with traditional instruments from our partner cultures to illuminate the interconnectedness of musical language at the core of inspiring, and striving, relationships between cultural communities.
Inspired first by the core multiculturalism of DM’s own musicians, who hail from 10 countries and 3 continents, Voices of L.A. was further inspired by MusiKaravan, the 6-month COVID-era musical road-trip undertaken by violinist and Artistic Director Etienne Gara and DM violinist YuEun Kim, which led to an award winning 15-episode video series, produced by Delirium Musicum.
This first edition of Voices of L.A., in May 2025, is a collaboration with Korean artists of international recognition playing traditional instruments (gamin on Piri, JiYun Song on Daegeum, DoYeon Kim on Gayageum and commissioned composer, Ji-Hye Kim on Korean percussion). The performance honors Korean traditions, exploring Korean culture and heritage while cultivating mutual appreciation and bonding through the universal language of music to foster friendships, educate one another, and welcome new diverse audiences to discover Korean culture and classical music.
