About this Event
After the Society business meeting that will including voting for two board members, Mary Fleming, President of the Delaware County Farm Bureau, will close out our year of agriculture-related programs by speaking on “The Essential Root of All Society: Agriculture".
Mary has enjoyed a lifetime of farming in Delaware County which began when she was just old enough to hold the nipple buckets to feed baby calves. The family farm, Shady Haven Jerseys also raised crops, hogs, horses, and her flock of sheep. Her brother John operates the farm today.
When she finished nursing school, Mrs. Fleming married a neighboring farmer, Bob Fleming. He was a national leader in the Jersey industry and exported live cattle to 8 foreign countries including Japan and Brazil. They raised four children, three of whom are farming today.
She continued working full time as a registered nurse for 48 years. During this time, she received grant funding from CDC/NIOSH to research farm issues of safety, health, and fatalities earning a reputation presenting at national and international scientific conferences.
She continues to operate Ideal Jersey Farm where she leases dairy calves and cows to 4H and FFA members. Her children and grandchildren now enjoy the farm life here. She has served as a leader in nursing and agricultural organizations at the local, state, and national level. Her education includes:
· Diploma from Grant Hospital School of Nursing
· Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Capital University
· Masters in Public Health, The Ohio State University
