About this Event
If you think classical music was all written hundreds of years ago in another country, you have been missing out! Come hear the birth of four new works: two short chamber operas, "Graceland" by Omar Surillo and "A Long Trip" by Jordan Kuspa, and excerpts from two longer operas-in-progress, "Tear Down This Wall" by Polina Nazaykinskaya and "The Big Swim" by Meilina Tsui.
Opera is one of the most multifaceted art forms, and it takes much more than a composer and singers to create a new opera. Developing a new opera takes librettists, dramaturgs, technical staff, and all the support of dedicated opera companies to bring a work to the stage. In this concert, we will peel back the curtain and give a true glimpse into the world of the modern opera composer. First, join us before the show at 6:30 for a panel discussion with several of our opera collaborators: composers, librettists, performers, and more, as we explain the process of taking an opera from an initial idea to the stage.
Then, at 7:30, hear excepts from two pieces that will go on to premieres at major opera houses in the near future. Meilina Tsui and Polina Nazaykinskaya have both been commissioned by major opera companies, and we are offering our DMICS audience a sneak peak of those works before anyone else will see them! You won't want to miss this show!
The Del Mar International Composers Symposium (DMICS) exists to encourage the sharing of new musical ideas between composers, performers, and the community, and to present the best new concert music from around the world in the beautiful city of Del Mar. Join us to connect through music and to hear something beautiful that you have never experienced before!
