Rojava, the autonomous Kurdish-led region in northern Syria, is facing an existential threat. Since its emergence, Rojava has represented a rare experiment in grassroots democracy, gender liberation, and multiethnic coexistence in the Middle East. Today, Kurdish communities are being displaced, massacred, and erased as the Syrian government and allied Islamist militias move to crush Kurdish self-rule. This is ethnic cleansing.
At the same time, Rojhelat (Iranian Kurdistan) remains on the front lines of resistance against the Iranian regime. Kurds have played a central role in the ongoing uprising against state repression, paying a devastating price through mass arrests, executions, militarization, and collective punishment. For decades, the Iranian government has subjected Kurdish communities to systemic oppression, political violence, and cultural erasure — a campaign that continues today.
These attacks are not isolated. They are part of a broader regional effort to silence Kurdish self-determination through state violence, repression, and forced displacement.
We are gathering in Knoxville to stand with the people of Rojava and Rojhelat, to demand protection for Kurdish civilians, and to oppose all efforts to dismantle Kurdish autonomy through violence, repression, and ethnic cleansing. Silence enables atrocity. Kurdistan must not be abandoned.
