A few days before Halloween, the Deep End Sextet conjures up the ear-pleasing sounds of “haunting jazz.” Think bittersweet melodies, syncopated surges of adrenaline, disembodied voices bouncing down dark and deserted streets, monsters that come out swinging at night, and the songs of sad but endearing ghosts. They'll be playing their arrangements of contemporary and classic jazz compositions that feature minor tonalities, cast noir-ish spells, or simply have nocturnal or slightly spooky titles. Modern tunes such as Kenny Barron's "Phantoms," Joey Calderazzo’s "Midnight Voyage,” Joe Henderson's "Out of the Night," and Rick Margitza's "Street of Thieves" as well as standards like "Harlem Nocturne" and "Night and Day.” Let the ghoul times roll!
The Deep End started out as a rehearsal band of long-time Bay Area jazz musicians who hoped to make the best of the pandemic. They wanted to explore lesser known music that would be more fun, interesting, and challenging than what they often played at the usual gigs. They’re drawn to innovative composers—classic giants such as Shorter, Dameron, Monk, and Ellington as well as contemporary artists many folks may not know. The repertoire and the arrangements that evolved over their weekly sessions have let them dive into the deep end of this music. Hence, their name.
Michael Gold (sax), Gerald Beckett (flute), Ari Caprow (guitar), Derek James (trombone), Mike Arnold (bass), David Strong (drums).
