Deep Dive Urban Safaris by the North East Heritage Library provide a boots on the ground guide to the understated areas of the North East.
About this Event

Cities don't start with their castles and cathedrals. They start with the people who build them.

Deep Dives is a concept by the North East Heritage Library to take historical walks away from the grandeur and into the nitty gritty. Sports, industry, utilities and street furniture all feature in this series of informal walks which aim to capture the imagination and to take a second glance at the history we might not catch first time.

You will receive a free colour coded guide, which will supplement our walk with maps and photographs to really gain an insight into our surroundings.

Duration: Around 3 hours
Distance: 6 miles
Location: Fulwell to Sunderland (Meeting location will be given in due course)
When: 12th October, 9:00am

Our second regular route will take us across the north east heartlands of Wearside from Fulwell to the city centre. This route covers every major facet of the areas heritage - Milling and quarrying in the north, Christianity and communities on both sides of the Wear, the shipyards which built modern Sunderland and of course football. All underline the modern Mackem identity, and we intend to give walkers a boots on the ground insight into the people who built this incredible city.

Please wear appropriate footwear and attire. If it's raining, please ensure you adjust accordingly. I cannot be held responsible for any incident which takes place during the walk. There is always a chance the walk will be impacted by adverse weather. If it prevents us from meeting and walking, then you will be provided a full refund.

Feel free to drop out at any time if it suits you. It will be as informal as possible while maintaining a safe and navigable route through Sunderland. Please also feel free to contribute what you may know or what I might miss for an engaging group discussion.

I will send all attendees an email within a week of the event for meeting location and a few bits of information. Feel free to contact me at any time though. I always ensure we have a break halfway through for refreshment.
