Join us at Sur NYC for an intimate evening with Guillermo Decurgez, better known as Decur. As part of our South Hemisphere series, we are very excited to welcome this extraordinary illustrator and graphic novelist for a conversation about his creative journey. Decur will discuss his first graphic novel, When You Look Up, a captivating work that sits at the crossroads of picture books and graphic novels, which earned the prestigious Original Art Show Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators and was published by Enchanted Lion Books.
This event will be of interest to anyone passionate about picture books, artistic process, and the connection between personal narrative and narrative illustration. Decur will share the inspirations behind his 180+ page visual story, exploring how he created a work that bridges picture books and graphic novels. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session, where attendees can delve deeper into his creative process and upcoming projects. About Decur
Guillermo Decurgez, better known as Decur, was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1981. A self-taught cartoonist and illustrator, Decur is celebrated for his evocative, imaginative work that blends deep childhood nostalgia with his distinct visual style. Before pursuing art full-time, he worked as a mason and factory operator, handling up to one hundred and forty car doors a day. After a transformative personal journey, he shifted his life towards illustration, channeling his experiences into artwork filled with emotional depth and playful nostalgia.
His publications include Merci!, Pipí cucú, Semillas 1, and Mi cajón favorito, with contributions to La Nación, La Posta Hoy, and esteemed magazines such as Orsai, Fierro, and Internazionale. In addition to his books, Decur has illustrated numerous titles, including Cuentos del Globo 3, The Almost Perfect Crime, Mrs. Holle, and Tolstoy’s Ivan, the Fool.
His artwork has been exhibited internationally in France, Spain, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Argentina, and the United States. His latest graphic novel, When You Look Up (2020), published by Enchanted Lion Books, was recognized by The New York Times as one of the best books of the year and earned him the Gold Medal at the Society of Illustrators' Original Art Show. It has been translated into Spanish, English, Korean, French, and other languages.
Currently residing in Arroyo Seco, Argentina, Decur continues to create in his grandfather's home, accompanied by his wife Celeste and their two dogs. His creative space, filled with antique desks and cherished mementos, serves as the perfect environment for his boundless artistic imagination.

Enchanted Lion Books is an independent publishing company based in Brooklyn, NY. We opened our doors and published our first list in spring, 2003. We love books, well-told stories, and illustrations that open up the visual world and deepen a child's sense of story.
