The South Acton Congregational Church (SACC), a beloved cornerstone of the community for over 130 years, will hold a special decommissioning service on Sunday, March 9th, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. This service will provide an opportunity to honor and reflect on the congregation's rich history and enduring impact on the South Acton community.
Though this marks the closing of a significant chapter in the church’s history, the spirit of SACC lives on. The worshipping community has found a new home at the West Concord Union Church, a congregation that shares SACC’s values of faith, service, and fellowship. The two groups began nesting together full-time in mid-January: this nesting period concludes in June when members of the historic SACC congregation will have the opportunity to become members of WCUC.
Since its founding in 1892, SACC has been a place of faith, fellowship, and service. Over the years, the church has hosted a wide range of community events, from lively rummage sales and festive holiday gatherings to engaging theater productions and important service meetings. The spirit of giving back was a hallmark of the church, demonstrated through initiatives like the "SACC Movers," who helped residents with relocations, and the congregation's long-standing participation in the Mothers' Day Walk for Peace. SACC also played an active role in advocating for social justice, participating in anti-gun violence protests and founding a mini community food pantry to serve those in need.
The church’s architecture is a testament to its warm, welcoming spirit. Built in 1892, the church's exterior facade has changed little over the years, except for the addition of an accessible entry ramp. Notably, SACC was the first building in Acton to feature stained-glass windows. Inside, the sanctuary, with its warm, wood-panelled interior, housed a beloved 1912 Estey pipe organ, played each Christmas Eve as a cherished tradition.
The decommissioning service will be a meaningful time to share cherished memories, express gratitude for the dedication of past and present members, and celebrate the church's enduring legacy in the South Acton community. Following the service there will be a reception with light refreshments.
