Although often ignored, material traces of Italian colonialism are ubiquitous in the public space. In Florence, behind the glossy medieval and Renaissance heritage, a large amount of street names, commemorative plaques, monuments, institutions, etc. are visible markers of the country’s colonial past. On the occasion of BHMF 2025, Daphné Budasz organise an unconventional city tour that presents an alternative perspective of the city and its historical identity. This two-hour decolonial visit of the city of Florence aims at raising awareness on colonial legacies and reflecting on the social, political, and cultural consequences of colonialism within Italy’s contemporary society.
