PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE THE FESTIVE HOLIDAYS, THIS MONTH’S MEETING IS A WEEK EARLIER THAN USUAL AND SWITCHES FROM A WEDNESDAY TO A TUESDAY.Our December choice is a haunting and lyrical novel that explores the fragility of civilisation and the enduring power of art in the face of catastrophe. Set in the aftermath of a devastating flu pandemic that wipes out most of humanity, the story follows a travelling Shakespearean theatre troupe known as the Symphony as they journey through the ruins of North America. Interwoven with their narrative are glimpses of the pre-collapse world, centering on actor Arthur Leander and those connected to him—his ex-wives, his son, and a mysterious graphic novel titled Station Eleven. Through shifting timelines and perspectives, Mandel examines memory, survival, and the human need for meaning, ultimately suggesting that even in the darkest times, “survival is insufficient”.
