About this Event
Winter Sowing is an approach for starting seeds that need cold stratification. The jug acts as a mini greenhouse, and seeds emerge in the spring when they are ready. Its a fun set it and forget way to start plants!
Special guest, Becky Gutzman, will be leading us through the process. Becky is a master gardener and retired extension educator for UW-Extension in Columbia and Dodge counties. She presented the topic at the 2025 Garden Expo.
We Will Supply:
Potting mix, duct tape, tools, seeds (from our library), snacks
Please Bring:
- Milk Jug (1/2 or 1-Gallon). Any clear or translucent, rigid container that can function as a mini-greenhouse will work. Milk jugs are considered the best container to winter sow seeds in because they’re cheap, nicely sized, widely accessible, and easy to reuse.
- Favorite Seeds (or you can peruse the seed library we will have available)
- Gloves (optional)
- Your coffee or beverage of choice (optional)
