Since its initial publication in 2013, The California Naturalist Handbook has been essential reading for the annual Naturalist Certification course presented through the Hopland UC Extension. The book and the course were designed for anyone with an interest in the natural world. They provide a science-based introduction to California’s natural history, with an emphasis on observation, discovery, stewardship and conservation. The chapter headings convey the depth and thoroughness of the book, with topics like California’s Biodiversity, Indigenous Perspective and Stewardship, Earth’s Formation and Plate Tectonics, Water and Watersheds, Plant Communities of California, Environmental Issues, and so on. The Handbook also discusses how to create and use a field notebook, natural resource interpretation, citizen science, and collaborative conservation.
