Death over DraftsSept 28, 12:30pm-2:30pm
St. George Brewing Company
Hampton, VA
Our society does not always make it easy to have conversations about death and grieving. In an effort to change that, SEVASH (Southeastern Virginia Atheists, Skeptics, & Humanists) has organized this Death over Drafts event as a casual and fun community gathering to spark curiosity, conversation, and connection around all things death and dying. Our goal here is to destigmatize these important conversations regarding end-of-life care and forge meaningful connections by combining libations with conversations that foster a sense of community and belonging.
To facilitate this conversation, we have invited...
— Betsy DeVille: Author of "Grief for Atheists: A Compassionate Guide with Evidence-Based Strategies to Navigate Your Loss." She will discuss science-based, compassionate grief resources from a secular point of view.
— Judy Welp: A volunteer activist from Compassion & Choices VA who will discuss their efforts to authorize, implement, and defend medical aid in dying so all terminally ill people who are eligible will have access to the full range of end-of-life care options.
— Christina Nolen: A death industry professional with mortuary experience who will discuss the importance of open conversations about end-of-life planning, resources for do-it-yourself paperwork, disposition options including green/eco-friendly ideas, and the importance of ensuring wishes are honored for LGBTQIA folks including references to get started.
Please note:
— Event is FREE and open to the public, all are welcome!
— You can still attend if you don't love beer.
— This is a super supportive community, yet we are not a support group.
— In this communal environment, we remind you to be responsible for your own engagement.
Betsy will also have secular-themed items from her shop for sale, which you can preview here: https://www.betsydeville.com/
