Strange Vices and Bloody Blades is a two-day festival of Italian giallo films - stylish, sleazy, and shocking murder mysteries full of strange twists and turns. We'll have video introductions from several guest speakers, along with a newly written zine about the genre and all four films - and a giallo bingo card! ===
Day 2 of our festival kicks off with Death Carries a Cane (Maurizio Pradeaux, 1973), a film that’s sure to fill up your giallo bingo card. Nieves Navarro (a staple actor of the genre) stars as a photographer who accidentally witnesses a murder through a coin-operated tourist telescope. Along with her artist boyfriend Alberto, she investigates - but when other witnesses start turning up dead, she realises she may be closer to the murderer than she thought. A rare big-screen appearance of this classic giallo film!
Our final film will be Dario Argento’s Tenebrae (1982). A true maestro of the giallo, Argento presents a meta-take on the genre that brought him so much success. An American murder-mystery author finds himself caught up in a police investigation while on a book tour in Rome, after a serial killer claims to have been inspired by his novels. Featuring fantastic supporting performances from John Saxon and Daria Nicolodi and an absolute banger of a soundtrack from prog-rock band Goblin, Tenebrae is not to be missed!
