Evolving Culture, Healing the World: Generative Cultural Renewal as a Framework for Conscious Change
Culture is both the vessel of our highest ideals and the carrier of our deepest wounds. In Generative Cultural Renewal, Dr. Sousan Abadian—Harvard-trained scholar, Fulbright Specialist, and Executive Director of the Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington—offers a transformative ethical framework for conscious cultural evolution. Drawing from decades of work in international development, collective trauma healing, and adaptive leadership, she argues that the gravest threats to humanity’s future lie not in climate or conflict alone, but in the unexamined habits, norms, and “trauma footprints” embedded in our cultures. Through real-world examples—from ending female genital mutilation/cutting to restoring Indigenous dignity—Dr. Abadian calls faith leaders and change agents to the sacred task of renewing culture without shame or coercion. Her message: we can heal what we inherit, preserving what is life-affirming while courageously transforming what harms.
