About this Event
If you had the chance to talk to someone who died, that you loved, would you take it? Eternal You delves into the world of tech-startups creating avatars of the deceased. With the help of artificial intelligence and Big Data, a dream comes true that is as old as mankind itself: eternal life.
We will start our exploration at Newcastle City Library with a workshop called Tickets for the Afterlife. You will get the chance to explore a set of physical tickets that expand on past, present and future technologies linked to death and immortality (4pm – 5:45pm).
Following this we will walk over to the Tyneside Cinema for an evening viewing of the newly released documentary Eternal You (that had its world premiere at 2024 Sundance Film Festival) starting at 6:15pm.
This will be followed by a panel of experts in death and technology chaired by Dr Georgina Robinson (Centre for Death and Life Studies – Durham University) with Chris Stokel-Walker (journalist and author of How AI Ate the World), Sumantha Abrams (funeral director – natural burial ground, Seven Penny Meadow) and Dr Jo Bell (social scientist and expert on trauma and loss – University of Hull).
We will end the evening with some drinks and socialising at the Tyneside Bar Cafe.
You are welcome to attend either the library or cinema part of this event independently but you need to be15+ to see the film. Tickets for the film can be purchased here.
DeadGoodFilmClub hosts screenings and events about death and dying to encourage conversations around topics often considered taboo. Expect great films, fascinating discussions and revealing insights from people working in areas as diverse as health care, undertaking, public services and the creative communities.
Curated by Newcastle-based producer and funeral celebrant Andy Jones, DeadGoodFilmClub was devised in partnerships Newcastle's 'Death Positive library', Tyneside Cinema and Northumbria University.
