About this Event

Dead Ink began life in 2011 as one of the first digital-only independent presses. Started by Wes Brown in Leeds with a grant from Arts Council England, Dead Ink established itself as an innovative new publisher with an eye for creative projects and spotting emerging new talent. It was at this time that Nathan Connolly came on board to help with publicity and then as an Editor when Dead Ink released its first print titles in 2014 and experimented with crowdfunding.

In 2023 it was announced that Dead Ink would be joining Arts Council England’s National Portfolio. Though we’ve grown over the last decade, our DIY roots persist and feed our ambitions. We’re based in Liverpool these days and operate out of our office on Hope Street. Every year brings us new challenges, but it also brings us new rewards as we bit by bit get bigger and bigger and better and better.

Swanna in Love

It's the summer of 1982 and fourteen-year-old Swanna Swain is the only one left at camp. The place is a ghost town by the time her mother Val finally shows up six hours late-stoned and radiant-in a Ford pickup driven by Borislav, her new young Russian lover. Assuming she is headed home to her air-conditioned Upper West Side apartment, Swanna and her lovable younger brother Madding are instead dragged to Vermont-to an artist colony where kids are not welcome and they are forced to sleep in the back of the truck, while Val is cosy inside the house with the Russian. Then Swanna meets Dennis, a handsome married father of two, at a bowling alley, and, knowing a thing or two about seduction from Judy Blume, her best friend at camp, and her own parents' many affairs-she sets out to convince Dennis to help her. But love seldom obeys rules, and even a tough, smart, city girl like Swanna might not be able to handle falling in love.

Absorbed

Alison has been with her boyfriend, Owen, since university and now she's working a dull office job and has given up on the book she was writing. She was beginning to forget who she was before she met him, that is, until she absorbed him.

This event is free to attend and takes place on the 3rd floor in the Benjamin Henry Room.
