Directions From Madison: take Hwy 12 north towards Sauk City: turn west/left on County Hwy Y; turn left/south Hwy 78; Turn Left /East onto Wachter Rd. Road up is steep and narrow with many places where 2 cars cannot pass at the same time. Park at top under the Open Pavilion.
The Black Hawk Ridge trails located on State Highway 78 approximately 2.5 miles south of Highway 12. They are just 3 miles southeast of Sauk City and about 15 miles northwest of Madison. See red star on map at right. The trails at Blackhawk are open to hiking and horses. There are roughly 8.5miles of horse trails though woods & open meadows with most of them being suitable for driving. Footing is mostly turf with some gravel/rocky & rutted/root areas. Most horses will do fine without shoes.
There is a large shelter to park and hitch in and a Pavilion with picnic tables to gather and eat lunch. Those participating are urged to bring their own sack lunch and beverage and stop to enjoy lunch together. While there is a water pump onsite it may not be turned on and available for use during our drive so water for horses should be brought with.
At this time, no state park sticker/trail pass is required.
To participate MUST be DDC members or join at drive. Members need to CHECK-IN with host prior to unloading and hitching to sign waivers and provide copy of current Coggins.
Start out on trails around 10am, break for lunch @ noon & can drive again after lunch.
