The following is more information on The Little Eric’s Foundation as told by childhood friend, Jonathan Fernandes:
The Little Eric’s Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that helps raise awareness and helps fund the research of Pediatric Brain & Childhood Cancer. The organization first began with the unfortunate passing of little Eric Speicher, a local boy from West Pittston.
Eric was one of the most caring people I have personally come into contact with, as we lived just blocks away from each other and also went to school together. Eric was considered one of my best friends as children, as he always knew how to cheer anyone up with his smile or his funny, life-loving attitude.
Eric was obsessed with sports from a young age, with his favorite being baseball -- he was a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox. I remember the times where we would go and play Wiffle ball or even play knee hockey in his living room with all of our friends. We would sit and watch whatever sporting event was on at the time.
Eric always had this incredible way of making sure everyone was included and had this special vibe where he was always one of the happiest kids at any moment.
Eric unfortunately was diagnosed with brain cancer, formally known as Anaplastic Ependymoma, on June 9th, 2011. After a year and a half of battling, he unfortunately passed away on December 23, 2013 after a courageous battle.
Little Eric’s Foundation was soon founded by Eric Speicher, Sr. and Jessica Speicher, Eric's parents. The Foundation has hosted several events such as Little Eric’s Game Night, Cycle for Survival, and my personal favorite that I attend every year - Little Eric’s Big Wiffle Ball Classic. The Foundation continues to strive and support the awareness and assisting of Pediatric & Childhood Cancer.
