Welcome to Black Broadway! Celebrate Black history and explore the music and art scene that coined D.C.'s Greater U Street, Black Broadway.
About this Event

As part of the 2022 DC Jazz Festival's Jazz in the Hoods programming, local journalist and author of Black Broadway in Washington, D.C., Briana Thomas, is hosting a special edition Music and Murals walking tour of U Street.

Journey through one of Washington, D.C.'s most historical and unique neighborhoods on this 2 hour guided walking tour. With the use of community storytelling and engaging visuals, we will stroll through the Greater U Street area once known as Black Broadway.

During this experience you will view murals of notable history makers like D.C. native Duke Ellington, and learn about the Jazz and Cultural Renaissance that paved the way for today's African American successes, talents, and heroes. We will reminisce on U Street's vibrant nightlife and flashy attractions as we highlight the entertainment venues such as the Howard Theater and the Lincoln Theatre that brought national recording artists like Billie Holiday and Miles Davis to the corridor during the early 1900s.

  • Great activity for individuals as well as corporate, non-profit, and or student groups!
  • A DEI training favorite!
  • For private group tour inquiries please contact the organizer.
