DESCRIPTION
Ever hear the phrase "the eyes are a window unto the soul"? Well, we firmly believe that food, particularly everyday food, serves as the window unto the soul of a city. Join us for a tasty and engaging day long culinary tour of Washington D.C. From bakeries, to fish and cheesemongers, to family run butcher shops, to Michelin starred and James Beard Award winning street food, America's capital deserves its status as one of the best food cities in the country.
This is a walking and eating tour of the city. We will purchase small items to taste or larger items to share with the group at several tops, while at others it will be up to you to purchase anything you might want to taste. We happily can cater to individual preferences but please note this is not a kosher, vegetarian, or vegan friendly tour. We respect everyone's palettes equally, but this is designed for the omnivores of the universe!
Part of the cost of the tour is to cover the expense of purchasing items for all participants to try. You do not have to participate and you do not need to purchase anything, though we highly recommend coming hungry and with an open mind and a ready mouth!
We will provide utensils, napkins, plates, wipes, sanitizer, and other necessary items but please note a lot of stops will require us eating on the streets and/or with our hands!
This tour features treats and eats from many different ethnicities and cultures including European, Latin, and Asian heritages as well as American originals and local creations.
BASIC INFORMATION
Start Time: 9:00 AM
End Time: 6:00 PM (Varies depending on subway reliability, group's walking speed, and how busy certain establishments are)
(You may leave at any point upon telling the tour guide)
Distance: 6 Miles worth of walking throughout the day
Meeting Location: Union Station - Washington DC.
See note below for exact location.
Meeting Note: If the weather is good we will meet just outside of the main entrance to Union Station on street level in Columbus Circle. If the weather is not great we will meet just inside of Union Station near the main entrance as you walk across the street from Columbus Circle. Either way, look for a 6^0 tall guy with a big blue bag on his back or at his feet with a flagpole sticking out of it high into the air.
DC TRANSPORTATION
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A ONE-WAY TOUR.
Once the tour is complete you will be on your own to return to Union Station or to wherever your travels may carry you though we will gladly provide clear directions. If you're coming from Philadelphia and meeting at Ft. Totten Station, you may follow the guide back to Ft. Totten once the tour is complete.
This tour involves three to four subway rides throughout the day so we advise purchasing a daily Metro Pass for the tour.
Washington DC's Metro System accepts all major credit cards as well as cash to purchase tickets for the subway system. Additionally, you can download the Metro App on your SmartPhone app known as SmarTrip to purchase a pass ahead of time.
PHILADELPHIA PARTICIPANTS
If you are traveling from the Philadelphia metropolitan area to Washington DC for the tour, the tour guide can help arrange carpools to help save on the cost of gas & tolls.
You can anticipate returning to Ft. Totten Station on the Red Line of the DC Metreo between 6:30 and 7:30 PM, meaning you will return to the Philadelphia area, depending on traffic and if you make any stops on the way home, between 9 and 10pm.
We HIGHLY advise that you arrive for the morning train from Ft. Totten Station early in order to avoid missing the tour due to being late to Union Station.
We also advise you to download the SmarTrip App and purchase a day-long Metro Pass for $13.
There is a parking fee for Ft. Totten Station
The exact times will be included in the logistics email sent out to all participants a day or two before the tour.
WHAT TO BRING (GEAR)
CASH! Some places might be cash only. At other locations cash will help expedite your check-out.
Good, solid, comfortable walking shoes that you can walk 6+ miles in on concrete pavements & sidewalks.
We advise not wearing flip-flops or any other flimsy footwear.
We also advise that you not wear anything that you would mind getty dirty, dusty, wet, etc., depending on conditions.
A bottle or two of water
A bag or other means of carrying personal items
We HIGHLY recommend bringing freezer packs or insulated cooler bags during the summer to help keep any purchases you may make to take home nice and cold as needed.
Cameras & cellphones (for pictures) welcome!
Appropriate clothing based on the forecasted weather conditions - temperature, precipitation, etc. for the duration of the tour/event.
Please reach out to [email protected] with any questions or concerns about clothing or other gear to bring before any tour/event.
CHILDREN
Children 10-18 years of age are welcome. We do not encourage younger children to attend as it will be hard to navigate through some of the markets/shops with a stroller and younger children may get cranky and probably won't be that willing to try new food. HOWEVER, they are welcome so long as they are supervised and there is one adult over 21 for each child in a family/group.
BREAKS/BATHROOMS
There will be multiple short bathroom breaks on our tour, though there are some large gaps in between these.
Public bathrooms are available at the starting/end point of the tour.
Other bathrooms needs/stops will be up to participants to find, use, and then rejoin the group
