Durham’s own Lauren Sovereign is well-traveled on earthly and astral realms, bringing a musical journey of global soul and nostalgic futurism to raise vibrations. Her DJ sets are shaped from formative time spent in Durham, Nicaragua, and Brooklyn, blending rhythms that impart the feeling of home. Formerly known as DJ Chela, she represented North Carolina’s music scene since the early aughts.
Back in the early 2000s, when you could count the woman DJs in North Carolina on one hand and no outsiders would dare set foot in Durham, Lauren Sovereign was here, laying the foundations for the scene as we know it today. Focused on her skills, the art form, and paying dues, she showcased her skills to international acclaim via mixtapes, DJ battles, radio, and clubs. After years rocking in NYC and adventuring in the Southwest, she has returned to North Carolina’s Piedmont, bringing her honed sound that transmutes and transcends, creating pleasure, catharsis, and unity on the dance floor.
