Publisher/HostThe Daylight Sessions
Daylight Poetry A daytime poetry gig, where kids are welcome too, but the material is for adults.
This is poetry to pack a punch and lift you up, from performance poets Liv Torc and Lily Redwood. Come along on their whirlwind journeys to explore everything from the political to the personal, parenting to neurodiversity, to the romantic, to the revolutionary.
Liv Torc is … A Radio 4 Slam winner, a former Bard of Exeter, Liv runs the poetry stage at WOMAD, Hot Poets, Banana Poems, The Big Girls Village and the lockdown haiku and photography project Haiflu – as featured on the Today Programme. She is a stand-up sit-down poet, as likely to make you laugh as cry (sometimes from multiple orifices). Her climate change in the face of motherhood poem The Human Emergency went viral across the world and she has performed at Glastonbury Festival, UNESCO in Paris, TEDxLondonWomen, the Southbank, the House of Commons and on BBCR4’s Poetry Please. She has supported Roger McGough and Hollie McNish and is currently working with the UNFCCC to bring poetry into the climate change fight. Her books include Show Me Life, Banana Poems and The Human Emergency.
“I’m coming to Exeter to perform funny (but actually quite heart-squishing) poems at parents ... in solidarity and tribute.” Liv Torc
“Liv Torc makes the world a better place” – Elvis McGonagall
“You don’t get any better than Liv Torc” – Roger McGough
"You're good at this" - Michael Rosen
Lily Redwood lives off-grid in South Wales with her husband and 2 children. She writes about the everyday extraordinary from the political to the poetical. Lily combines spoken word with tender verse, which comes alive through her live performance. She has recently been Cheltenham Poetry Festival Slam Finalist and the Bristol Milk Poetry Slam winner.
Most of her poems are written on the notes app hiding in the toilet from her 2 children, or scribbled on the back of a shopping list, whilst burning the dinner.
Lily's debut pamphlet, You Make Me Think of Swifts, an unflinching and raw voice for motherhood, is out now with The Collective Press. Her work has been described described as: "visceral, loving and brave".
Expect an uplifting, supportive and empowering gig– in the middle of the day!
Is it for me?
Everyone is welcome within the audience! You do not need to have children, or have children with you to enjoy a night out in the day, but you will need to be ok with it being a relaxed, child friendly space, as the space is parent-friendly. Daylight Sessions is about daytime access to art and culture, as evening gigs don't suit everyone. So whether you’re in need of a bit of culture, a community, a daytime date or just an early lunch break – you are welcome!
What to expect if you are bringing a child:
This is a relaxed and lively space for grown ups but children of all ages are welcome and supported to be themselves, no shhing required. You are free to come and go without apology, move around the space to follow little explorers. There will be a buggy park, baby changing, toys and mats - we have you covered. So you are able to enjoy some brilliant poetry, no baby sitter required!
Content:
The material is grown up and there may be some swearing, for example Lily has a poem called 'Shit Mum'.
If you have any questions about access, or want to know more about what to expect please email Lizzy at [email protected]
Produced by Lizzy Humber as part of The Daylight Collective and supported by Arts Council England, Exeter Phoenix and M/Others on the Mic.
