What to expect
A beautiful circular hike through the forest starting on a wide forest road and continuing on narrow hiking paths. Above the forest it offers stunning views from the summit over Jochberg, Herzogstand, lake Kochelsee below and the Wetterstein mountains in the distance. On our way back we can have a swim in the lake and enjoy cake and coffee on the sun terrace of a restaurant directly overlooking the lake.
Tour
We start at Kochel am See train station soon leaving the town behind on a wide walking path into the forest. Half-way in we follow a narrow hiking path steeper up to the summit of Sonnenspitz for which you need to be sure-footed, hence used to walk on uneven hiking paths. From the summit we follow a similar small and steep hiking path down until we reach the forest road again that brings us back to the Kochelsee. At the lake we can take a cold swim and enjoy food and refreshments at the restaurant “Grauer Bär”, which is right next to the lake.
Physical requirements
You need to be able to walk comfortably on narrow hiking paths uphill for 3 hours in total with a small break every hour. The whole hike will take approximately 5 hours of walking with shorter sit-down breaks every hour, a longer break at the summit and in the end by the lake and restaurant.
Length: 14 km, 750 meter ascent
Duration: 5 hrs walking, 10 hrs total
Travel
Start: Munich Hauptbahnhof (main station), 07:40 am. Meet in front of platform 33. Departure RB 66 at 7:59 am.
End: Munich Hbf, ~ 6 pm
The Deutschlandticket is valid on the train journey. You can opt for a train included ticket, which means you will have to travel with the group to and from the hike on the same train. Or you may get your own ticket. Note that I am not able to tell you which of the trains we are taking on the way back, as the length of the hike depends on the weather and the pace of the group.
What to bring:
• Hiking boots, rucksack, waterproof rain jacket (& rain trousers), hiking poles
• Sun protection: cream, hat, sunglasses
• Water (1.5-2 liter) & snacks, snacks, packed lunch for the summit

Note that I can offer this ticket only if a minimum of two people travel together and that you have to travel with the group on this ticket. My name is Johanna, and I am a qualified UIMLA mountain leader, and a qualified yoga teacher (RYT 200) based in Munich.
