Tageswanderung: Felsenkanzel-Alpen - Shanti Treks
What to expect
The Felsenkanzel is a viewing platform high above Garmisch-Partenkirchen that offers a wonderful view of the Wetterstein and Karwendel mountains including Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. A circular path leads from the train station to the platform, and on the way back via the St. Martinshütte, a typical Bavarian hut where we stop for lunch, and Pflegersee a natural lake, where we stop for a swim before heading back to the train station.
Tour
We start at Garmisch-Partenkirchen train station soon leaving the town behind on a wide walking path until St. Martin Hütte (1028m). From here a narrow hiking path starts steeper up to Felsenkanzel. At the end there is a passage secured by railing for which you should not be afraid of heights. After about three and a half hours we reach the beautiful viewpoint. On the way back we pass St. Martin Hütte again where we stop for lunch. From here we turn north on Kellerleitensteig, a small hiking path crossing below the Kramer plateau to lake Pflegersee, where we stop for a swim. The way down to the train station is on a wide road again.
Physical requirements
You need to be able to walk comfortably on narrow hiking paths uphill for 3 hours in total with a small break every hour. The whole hike will take approximately 5 hours of walking with shorter sit-down breaks every hour, a one-hour sit-down break in the hut that serves food and drinks and a longer break by the lake.
Length: 14 km, 600 meter ascent
Duration: 5 hrs walking, 10 hrs total

My name is Johanna, and I am a qualified UIMLA mountain leader, and a qualified yoga teacher (RYT 200) based in Munich. I founded Shanti Treks in 2023 to create a hiking experience that brings together what I am passionate about. First, I love being in the mountains and experiencing new routes off the beaten tracks. Second, it is about connecting the body and mind with the nature around me and observing it with all my senses. And third, it is about bringing like-minded people together and forming new bonds.
I run dayhikes on weekends near Munich, as well as multi-day hiking weekends, multi-day trekking weeks& multi-day hiking and yoga retreats in the German, Austrian and Italian Alps. I also offer a tour in Nepal this fall around the Manaslu.
Note that I will be taking photos and short videos during the hike, which may be used on the homepage and on the social media accounts of Shanti Treks. By signing up to the hike it is assumed that there is consent for the photos and videos to be published.
