Poem 88 is pleased to present Atlanta artist David Robinson's first solo exhibition, Alluvium. Organic and man-made shapes comprise his hand-built, terra cotta sculptures. Glazed in white or black, and organized into spherical or box-like forms, Robinson's pieces recall coral reefs and shells and equally man-made detritus like pieces of rubber tire, or metal screens. The monochromatic treatment equalizes the forms into pleasing and mysterious puzzles. Poetic references to beginning and endings are seen throughout the works. They recall ancient relics and man-made reefs, biological structures and fantastical geodesic domes all in wondrous conversation.

In speaking about his work, Robinson says:
The work in this series investigates the residue of the human experience and the elusive search for order, logic and meaning in what is left behind. It explores the space between seemingly disparate objects and states: The present overlaps the past, the fabricated and what is created by the human hand compete with the organic and the accidental, and the ephemeral dances alongside the enduring. These sculptures embrace and celebrate the unknown as much as they celebrate the materiality of clay. Memory, consciousness, intention, and chaos are all at play in these works. Although largely self-taught, Robinson pursued ceramics and sculpture through a variety of sources beginning in 1999 at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta, GA, followed by workshops, seminars, and symposia. Robinson studied under notable ceramists Tip Toland, Margaret Bohls, Suze Lindsay at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts; Tom Bartel at Penland School of Crafts; Jenny Mendes, Debra Fritts, Susan Beiner, and Lisa Clague at Mudfire; Martin Dawe at CherryLion; with Glenn Dair, Diane Kempler, Bill Nixon at Callanwolde.
Robinson has participated in residencies at The Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Gaya Ceramic Arts Center in Bali, and The Hambidge Center for Arts and Sciences.
