About this Event

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough (John Adams, Truman, 1776) has bestowed his name to this prestigious award, which the Carpenters' Company presents to those whose work engages the public in better understanding the American story.

The national prize will be presented to Bryan Stevenson, Founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative, the National Memorial for Peace & Justice, and the Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. Mr. Stevenson’s legal work on behalf of wrongly incarcerated prisoners and his tireless efforts to record and interpret the history of lynching and its effects on American culture, recounted in the successful book and feature film Just Mercy, have inspired thousands and made him a nationally significant figure in our country’s ongoing effort to ensure that the founding principles of our democracy are enjoyed by all Americans.

The local prize will be presented to the Philadelphia Black History Collaborative, whose founders, Ismael Jimenez and Yaasiyn Muhammad, will accept. A portion of the event proceeds will support the Collaborative, which promotes the study of African American history within the School District of Philadelphia and provides professional development to African American history teachers.

6:30-8:00 p.m: Prize Ceremony (all guests)
