David Huebert’s writing has won the CBC Short Story Prize, appeared several times in Best Canadian Stories, and was a finalist for the 2020 Journey Prize. Huebert’s first story collection, Peninsula Sinking, won a Dartmouth Book Award and was runner-up for the Danuta Gleed Literary Award, among other accolades. His second story collection, Chemical Valley, won the Alistair MacLeod Short Fiction Prize and was a finalist for the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award and the ReLit Award. David teaches fiction writing at the University of King’s College in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), where he lives with his partner and two children. Oil People is his debut novel.
Born in Cape Breton, raised on Prince Edward Island, and based in Newfoundland, Jenina MacGillivray’s songs and stories are wry and nostalgic - with a voice that “evokes another era” she sings of lost loves in Portugal, the Isle of Wight, and the American Southwest - but also intimate and familiar and deeply located in Atlantic Canada - friendships in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Basin Head, PEI, and St. John’s. Her debut album Marion won Music NL’s Factor Album of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, and received rave reviews throughout Eastern Canada where it was called “the real deal” (Roots Canada) and “possibly the most beautiful album of the year” (East Magazine). Look for her sophomore album Perseids, released September 2024.
Thanks to our friends at Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Society for this great collaboration, and Year of the Arts for the funding that makes these events possible!
