Join us for a captivating evening talk "The Birth of Solar Systems" with Professor René Oudmaijer as part of The David Elder Lectures series in The Planetarium at Glasgow Science Centre.
🗣️ About The Talk
Ever since the first planets were discovered outside our own Solar System in the 1990s, more than 6,000 exoplanets have been found. These planets and the planetary systems they reside in come in many shapes and sizes, but how are such planetary systems actually formed?
In this talk, an overview of the history and an explanation of the thinking behind our current theories of the formation of (extra-)solar systems is given. These theories were mostly inspired by the best studied planetary system around; our own Solar System, and in the talk this will be put to the test by some of the most recent findings of the many other solar systems around.
🎤 About The Speaker
Professor René Oudmaijer studied at the University of Groningen, in the Netherlands, where his PhD research involved the fate of stars like our own Sun at the end of their very long lives. After obtaining his PhD, he went to Imperial College in London to investigate the formation of stars and planets. He then moved to Leeds where he headed the Astrophysics Group and is now at the Royal Observatory Belgium in Brussels. As an observational astronomer, he investigates the processes that happen very close to the stellar surfaces, such as the accretion onto the star when they grow and the mass loss at the end of their lives. These require the most precise measurements and in order to do so, he uses the largest telescopes and most recent techniques to study these processes.

The talk starts at 19.00 and lasts around 1 hour. The talk is best suited to older teenagers and adults.
Tickets are available to attend each talk in the David Elder Lecture series in-person at The Planetarium.
Tickets cost £6 per person, per lecture. Capacity is limited and pre-booking online is essential to avoid disappointment.
