Many of the characteristics of Utah English can be traced back to settlers from the eastern United States and Europe (especially England and Scandinavia), who flocked to Zion and lived in relative isolation until the arrival of the transcontinental railroad. Moreover, Utahns do not all speak a uniform dialect. The use of certain expressions and pronunciations varies widely depending on factors such as the speaker’s age, gender, religion, and geographic location.
