The Rev. John Jackman, a Moravian pastor, filmmaker, and author, will give a talk about "Dcerka – Daughter of God," John Hus’ remarkable spiritual guide for women. This book, written during Hus' exile in 1413, has never before been available in English. Written several years before the famed "The Imitation of Christ" by Thomas à Kempis , Hus’ guide reveals a profound respect for women’s spirituality, remarkable in his day – and ours! Dr. Michèle Miller Sigg of Boston University writes, “Hus was writing exclusively to a female audience…a spiritual instructional manual to equip them for an active public role, alongside their male counterparts.”Jackman will talk about Hus’ unusual views of women, who attended his sermons at the Bethlehem Chapel in droves. At a time when most theologians regarded women as unreliable inferiors fit only for housework and childbearing, Hus regarded them as equals in the spiritual realm. He wrote the guide specifically for the Beguines, a lay order of women who ministered to the poor and sick in Prague and across Europe. Hus scholar Dr. Thomas Fudge writes, “Hus wrote to these pious women because of his conviction that women were sometimes more ardent proponents of religious truth than the theologians of Prague in the early fifteenth century.”
There will be light refreshments, and a collection will be taken to support the work of the Unity Women’s Desk. Copies of the newly-released "Dcerka" will be available for purchase.
