Arddangosfa Trysorau Celf Wrecsam, 1876
Peter Bolton
Uwch-ddarlithydd mewn Hanes

Mae’r trawsnewid diwylliannol sydd wedi dod i ran Wrecsam yn ddiweddar yn hollol amlwg, ond bydd y ddarlith hon yn trafod stori weddol anhysbys sy’n dangos y modd y mae’r gorffennol, y dyfodol a’r presennol yn gwrthdaro trwy draddodiad, hunaniaeth ac apêl y dosbarth gweithiol. Yn ystod haf a hydref 1876, cynhaliwyd Arddangosfa Trysorau Celf yn Wrecsam, gan ddod â hynafiaethau a gweithiau celf amhrisiadwy i’r dref, gyda’r holl eitemau’n cael eu cadw mewn neuadd arddangos a adeiladwyd i’r pwrpas. Bydd y ddarlith hon yn pennu’r cymhellion a oedd wrth wraidd y digwyddiad uchelgeisiol hwn, yn bennaf trwy ddadansoddi’r prif drefnwyr a’r prif gyfranwyr. Hefyd, bydd yn ystyried pa mor llwyddiannus fu’r arddangosfa o ran cyflawni ei phrif nodau, sef dod â diwylliant i’r dref a goleuedigaeth i aelodau’r dosbarth gweithiol – a gâi eu disgrifio’n aml fel pobl a oedd yn fwy hoff o gwrw na chelfyddyd!

Bydd y mynychwyr yn dysgu am darddiad a chyd-destun hanesyddol yr Arddangosfa Trysorau Celf. Bydd Peter yn trafod cwmpas yr arteffactau diwylliannol a arddangoswyd, yr ymateb i’r digwyddiad (o du’r wasg leol, genedlaethol a rhyngwladol), llwyddiant cymharol y digwyddiad ac agweddau tuag at ddosbarthiadau gweithiol y dref.

Estynnir croeso i bawb sy’n ymhél â Wrecsam, celf, a hanes a diwylliant Wrecsam.

AM Y SIARADWR

Addysgodd Peter hanes ym Mhrifysgol Wrecsam am bron i ugain mlynedd, gan ymdrin â phynciau a oedd yn amrywio o gyfnod y Rhufeiniaid hyd at y Rhyfel Oer. Hefyd, mae ganddo ddiddordeb ysol yn hanes Cymru, yn enwedig hanes yr ardal leol a esgeulusir yn aml, yn ogystal â rôl diwylliant trwy’r oesoedd. Enwebwyd Peter ar gyfer Gwobr y Gymdeithas Hanesyddol Frenhinol.

Mae ymchwil Peter yn canolbwyntio ar Wrecsam a’i hunaniaeth Eingl-Gymreig. Canolbwynt ei ymchwil yw’r dosbarthiadau canol esgynnol yn Wrecsam a ariannodd y fenter, yr aristocratiaid a noddodd y fenter a’r dosbarthiadau gweithiol yr anelwyd y fenter atynt.

The Wrexham Art Treasures Exhibition of 1876
Peter Bolton
Senior Lecturer in History

Wrexham’s recent cultural transformation is evident, but this lecture will discuss a relatively unknown story that shows how the past, future, and present collide through tradition, identity and a working-class appeal. Through the summer and autumn of 1876, Wrexham hosted the Art Treasures Exhibition, bringing to the town priceless works of art and antiquities, all housed in a purpose-built exhibition hall. This lecture will determine the motives behind this ambitious event, largely through an analysis of its main organisers and contributors. It will also consider just how successful it was in its main aims, namely, to bring culture to the town and enlightenment to a working-class population that was often characterised as preferring ale to art!

Attendees will learn about the origins and historical context of the Art Treasures Exhibition. Peter will explore the scope of the cultural artefacts on show, reaction to the event - from local, national and international press – its relative success, and attitudes towards the working classes of the town.

All are welcome with an interest in Wrexham, art, and Wrexham’s history and culture.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Peter taught history at Wrexham University for almost twenty years, covering topics from the Roman period through to the Cold War. He is also keenly interested in Welsh history, especially the often-neglected history of the local area, and the role of culture throughout the ages. Peter was nominated for a Royal Historical Society Award.

Peter’s research centres on Wrexham and its Anglo-Welsh identity. With a focus on the upwardly-mobile middle classes of Wrexham who financed the venture, the aristocracy, who patronised it, and the working classes, who were its main target.
