About this Event
The Darkhorse Series was inspired by the brave Marines of the 3/5.
The poignant and emotionally powerful paintings in this collection were inspired by the brave Marines of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, a unit that faced immeasurable challenges and sacrifices in Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011.
After reading a profoundly moving NPR story ("An Afghan Hell on Earth for the Darkhorse Marines" by Tom Bowman) sent to her from Blue Star Marine Mother, and close friend, Maura Chippendale, artist Debra Ferrari was deeply inspired to create an original artwork as a tribute to the unit. An original oil painting, titled "The 3rd 5th Battalion Darkhorse #1” became Debra’s first artwork to help raise money to support combat veterans.
Debra's artistic journey continued as she connected with the families of veterans including Gold Star Marine Parents Gretchen and Kirk Catherwood, whose 19-year-old son, Alec Catherwood, was among the fallen. Motivated by these encounters, Debra committed to creating a total of 25 original Darkhorse paintings in honor of each of the 25 fallen Marines.
We are excited to showcase and auction the final eight paintings in this remarkable collection, and provide a unique opportunity for attendees to meet veterans, Gold Star parents, Blue Star parents, and support the Darkhorse Lodge. In addition to the original artworks, a curated selection of archival prints will also be available for purchase.
