Artist Statement

 In the depths of space, dark matter silently shapes the universe, exerting its invisible influence on the celestial bodies we see. Similarly, in "Dark Matter" by Alea Lovely, black takes center stage on raw linen canvas, creating a profound invitation to show how the unseen supports the seen. The unseen elements in the human experience, emotions, motion, fears, hopes, psyche, and spirit, are often overlooked or dismissed as fictional or stigmatized. Those internal aspects are an unavoidable part of our material world and deeply deserving of being seen. Healing only begins when we can look at the polarity of our darkness.

 Each stroke of black paint echoes the mysterious nature of the dark matter within us, inviting the viewers to contemplate the unseen forces that shape our world and the shadows that live deep within our souls. Just as dark matter is essential for the formation of galaxies and the structure of the cosmos, the raw canvas provides a foundational backdrop for the bold black strokes, highlighting their significant imprint and impact.

Through this collection, Alea Lovely explores the parallels between the enigmatic nature of human dark matter and the simplicity yet profoundness of the unfinished, ever-expanding universe. "Dark Matter" invites viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty of the unknown, where black strokes speak volumes without uttering a single word. As spectators engage with the art, they are encouraged to embrace their inner darkness in the interpretation of what they see, recognizing and accepting it as an integral part of the cosmic dance of creation and destruction, life and death, ultimately finding solace in the interconnectedness of all things.

About:

Alea Lovely is an Black American Contemporary and Abstract Artist who has worked in London, Paris, Hong Kong, and NYC but ultimately landed back at her home base in Kansas City, Missouri. Alea is most known for her black-and-white portraiture but has newly debuted her work as a painter. Alea had always been an extremely visual child with a very distinct empathic connection with people and she also has a not-so-secret connection with the spirit world and utilizes channeled messages in her work.

Being a primarily portrait photographer and capturing the essence of a person, while bringing an editorial influence has been her unique talent to make portraiture feel effortless, emotional, and authentic. After almost more than half her lifetime of learning to make the ordinary extraordinary photographically, it's given her the ability to find the soul of people through her photographs and now paintings. 

Alea currently loves to work with black primarily and infuse energy work into her paintings. She sees her work more as a production not only to be seen but felt by the intensity of simplistic contrast that makes the viewer vulnerable about how they feel about themselves. Utilizing therapeutic stimuli to engage the viewer in their own healing journey. Alea brings thought-provoking ideas and messages to her work and pieces that complement the viewer’s space.
