It has been nearly 90 years since galaxy clusters hinted at the existence of unseen matter, over 50 years since dark matter was shown to be necessary for understanding galaxy rotation curves, and over 20 years since colliding clusters seemed to prove its existence. It has also been over 6 years since I last gave a talk about dark matter. Has anything changed? There have still been no convincing direct detections of the particles that might constitute dark matter, though lots of money and effort has been expended. A minority of astrophysicists have recently become more vocal in support of alternatives. We must probably wait many more years for the answer. About the Presenter:
Galen Gisler was born in Clovis NM, and graduated High School there. With a PhD in astrophysics from the University of Cambridge, he eventually came to Los Alamos where he worked at the lab for 25 years. Then he and his wife Susan moved to Norway where he learned not quite enough geology at the University of Oslo, finally retiring back to their cozy mountain town. The PEEC planetarium is his favorite place to spend time.
Events in the planetarium are not recommended for children under age 4.
Admission: $8/adult, $6/child.
