The history of the northeast corner of Greenville County has been dominated by the violence of a culture driven by the constant battle of moonshiners and revenuers. We will explore the critical role the matriarchal heads of the major families played in shaping the Greenville we know today. Learn the dynamics that ensured their place in the History of the Dark Corner. Among these women you will be introduced to are Sarepta Merritt Davis who championed the formation of the Kingdom of Happy Land, a town of former slaves, Mourning Gosnell Plumley and her five generations of living decedents, Martha Lindsey Plumley family of moonshining sons and daughters who purchased Glassy Mountain, Rebecca Hagood Hightower who championed a women’s right to divorce a husband and own and operate her large plantation, and Luemer Plumley and her four sisters who beat the developers at their own game.Travelers Rest Historical Society Member, Greenville County Historian Jim Stehlik, will present a unique perspective on 200 years of Greenville’s history, accompanied by vintage photographs from his published books.
