Componist / pianist Dante Boon presenteert in dit programma werken van John Cage, Julius Eastman en de jonge Britse componist Sophie Stone samen met zijn eigen muziek. Van Cage klinkt Variations III, een werk uit 1963 voor variabele bezetting, waarin ook de omgeving (geluid, zelfs licht) een rol speelt, naast One5, een van de number pieces uit zijn late periode en gecomponeerd in de maand en het jaar waarin, onder zeer ongelukkige omstandigheden, Julius Eastman stierf in New York. Piano 2 werd gevonden tussen Eastman’s nagelaten papieren en pas enkele jaren geleden uitgegeven. Het is een zeer associatief werk, waarin steeds nieuwe motieven opduiken en weer verdwijnen en ook Chopin even meeklinkt.
Dante Boon schreef Dreamings in opdracht van een muziekliefhebber die hem vroeg om een pianostuk dat hijzelf graag zou willen spelen en met als thema het jaar 2020. De titel ontleende hij aan het duizenden jaren oude, religieus-historisch-filosofisch-geografische systeem van de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Australië, waarin familiebanden, ook geografisch en over de generaties heen, een grote rol spelen. Zoals Morton Feldman in Parijs een ontmoeting had met Heinrich Heine en daar later over schreef: “I saw him. Then I went back to my place and wrote my work, I Met Heine on the Rue Fürstenberg. They are not dead. They are with me.” Sophie Stone legt in Amalgamations paden aan tussen akoestische fenomenen, in en buiten de piano. De pianist legt bij elke uitvoering een andere weg af door het stuk en elke beslissing heeft consequenties voor de volgende klank.

Composer / pianist Dante Boon presents works by John Cage, Julius Eastman and the young British composer Sophie Stone together with his own music. Variations III, a work from 1963 for variable instrumentation, in which the environment (sound, even light) also plays a role, is played by Cage, in addition to One5, one of the number pieces from his late period and composed in the month and year in which, under very unfortunate circumstances, Julius Eastman died in New York. Piano 2 was found among Eastman's leftover papers and was released only a few years ago. It is a very associative work, in which new motifs keep appearing and disappearing again and Chopin also chimes in for a moment.
Dante Boon wrote Dreamings on behalf of a music lover who asked him to write a piano piece that he himself would like to play and with the year 2020 as the theme. He borrowed the title from the thousands of years old, religious-historical-philosophical-geographical system of the original residents of Australia, in which family ties, also geographically and across generations, play a major role. As Morton Feldman met Heinrich Heine in Paris and later wrote about it: “I saw him. Then I went back to my place and wrote my work, I Met Heine on the Rue Fürstenberg. They are not dead. They are with me.” In Amalgamations, Sophie Stone creates paths between acoustic phenomena, inside and outside the piano. The pianist follows a different path through the piece with each performance and every decision has consequences for the next sound.
