La Voz del Rayo is a dream workshop led by artist Daniel Godínez-Nivón that connects lightning phenomena in dreams with the reality of New York’s ancient trees and fossil forests, embedding dream work within ecological and cultural narratives.
This workshop developed from Daniel’s relationships with the Zapotec Indigenous migrant community in Juchitán, Oaxaca, in southwestern Mexico, and the Triqui Indigenous migrant community in Albany, New York. He combines art history and conceptual art processes linked to drawing, moving images, installation, and performance with tequio, a communal, collaborative, and compulsory work system implemented throughout Indigenous communities in Mexico.
This workshop is a key component of Daniel’s ongoing project Rasum A'núuj, or “Dream Assembly”, made in collaboration with Triqui midwives and families from San Juan Copala, Mexico. They are experts in dreaming, offering insights into how lightning and fire influence both ecosystems and human perceptions.
Participants are invited to share their own experiences with light in dreams and to engage in a collective invocation of lightning. La Voz del Rayo aims to deepen our connection with the fleeting essence of lightning and its enduring presence in the world. It is an opportunity to explore lightning’s role within the environment and embrace its perpetual influence and might.
