About this Event

Inspired by our current exhibition , we have arranged an affiliated series of six free talks by writers and researchers currently at the forefront of the exploration of men’s fashion and styling.

Five of the speakers have written chapters in our accompanying book, Dandy Style, which is available to buy in the gallery shop.

Dandy Style focuses on men’s fashion and image from the 18th century to the present day. The show explores how concepts such as elegance, uniformity and spectacle have evolved over the last 250 years.

Dr. Shaun Cole is Associate Professor in Fashion at Winchester School of Art, University of Southhampton. He was formerly Associate Dean of Postgraduate Communities at London College of Fashion and Head of Contemporary Programmes at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Shaun’s research examines the dressed male body and the ways in which the sexual subject can be understood as historically and spatially contingent and formed in relation to terms of gender, class and ethnicity.

He has lectured and published extensively on men's fashion and queer style and his publications include Don We Now Our Gay Apparel: Gay Men’s Dress in the Twentieth Century (2000), The Story of Men's Underwear (2010), and co-editor of Fashion Media: Past and Present (2013). Shaun has recently co-edited the book Dandy Style: 250 Years of British Men's Fashion (2021), which accompanies the Dandy Style exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery.
