About this Event
Dancers Against Cancer (DAC) is a charity organization at Stephen F. Austin State University that raises awareness for various cancers and raises money to donate to a cancer recipient and local foundation every semester. We dance for a cause and a cure, and we love what we do!
This semester, our team voted to raise awareness for Cervical Cancer. Our team will also be donating to the East Texas Cancer Alliance of Hope, which is located here in Lufkin, TX. As well as to our Recipient, Todd Neitzel. And our basket Recipients: Molly Maher, Rene Jones, Liam Sikma, Flora Jean Oliver, and Ruben Lopez.
Todd's Story:
Todd is the uncle of a DAC Alumni. While driving back to Kansas, Todd’s life changed instantly. Without any symptoms or warnings, he suddenly had a debilitating white flashing light in his left eye. Todd could not see the road, as he was driving 65 MPH. Fortunately, he got the car to the side of the road without an accident. After numerous tests and doctor visits, Todd was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The tumor was putting pressure on the optic nerve, causing vision problems.
Todd had surgery in mid-January, and they were able to remove all the tumors. However, after more tests, Todd was diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma brain cancer. This type of cancer is fast-growing and highly aggressive. While this type of cancer is treatable, it currently has no cure. Chemotherapy and radiation will start in Denver (180 miles from his home) within the next few weeks. He also plans to participate in a clinical trial using an Optune device. Treatment is expected to last at least a year, with him wearing the Optune device on his head full time. Realistically, he will probably fight cancer for the rest of his life.
