Conceived by Phill Wilson, Desmond Richardson, and Vanessa Estelle Williams; Artists and Activists for Health Equity launched Dance For Life, a dance festival to fight HIV/AIDS, COVID-19 and other health disparities confronting BIPOC and other marginalized and disenfranchised communities in 2022.Dance For Life draws its inspiration from the annual Fire Island Dance Festival which, since 1995, has raised more than $300 million to support essential services for people living with HIV/AIDS.
The inaugural Dance for Life event was a one-day festival followed by a VIP reception with the dancers, celebrities, and major donors. Due to the response to the 2022 festival, the organizers and supporters transformed the event into an annual dance festival in Los Angeles. The second annual Dance for Life Festival was held on June 24, 2023 at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center and included over 70 dancers and 11 dance companies.
With the addition of legendary world renowned dancer, choreographer, and Presidential Fellow Professor at Chapman University, Ido Tadmor, the third annual Dance for Life is positioning itself to become one of Los Angeles newest multi-cultural/multi-genre dance festivals.
Dance for Life raises awareness and much needed funds for critically important organizations fighting health disparities in our communities, especially those who continue to respond to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the additional needs created by COVID-19 chronic illnesses. The Festival brings new voices to the fight against health disparities; and raises awareness about the work that needs to be done to fight these intersectional issues.
