Dance Experiments | Episode 1


This series of events is an interactive experiential exploration of elements of performing arts including dance, music, theatre, audience engagement and more.


About Episode 1

In this episode, Sasirekha Raammohan, Sindhu Shyam and Uma Sathyanarayanan along with artist Abhishek Ravishankar vocalising explore the different elements of performing arts, each using dance as the commonality and medium while using their individual expertise to breakdown a variety of music. The aim is to challenge the artists to improvise spontaneously and create equally a meaningful experience. The artists attempt to restructure the relationship between dance and music by allowing each to inspire the other. There will be some audience interaction.

About the artists:

Sasirekha Raammohan is the Managing-Director of Kanagasabai, a well-established Bharatanatyam school in Mylapore. She started her Bharatanatyam at the tender age of four and went on to stage her Arangetram at eight. The school is well established and quality is the word that resonates in every aspect of Kanagasabai. She trains young dancers for solo performances, group shows, thematic presentations, variety programs and dance dramas.

Sasiekha learnt her art from leading proponents of Thanjai style of Bharatanatyam – Thanjai Arunachalam Pillai and Smt. Jayalakshmi Arunachalam (Kalaimamani Awardees). Sasirekha continues her advanced training in Bharatnatyam from Chitra Visweswaran (Padmashri Awardee). She learnt Nattuvangam under Bhagavathulu Seetharama Sharma. She is the recipient of the Sangeet Natak Academy Scholarship for training in nattuvangam under Guru M.V.Narasimhachari, Vasanthalakshmi and Smt. Indra Rajan. She was fortunate to learn under the abinaya exponent Smt. Kalanidhi Narayan.

Sindhu Shyam is a passionate Bharathanatyam performer, a committed teacher and a well known actor in Television, Movies and Commercials in both Tamil and Malayalam. A Post Graduate in Bharathanatyam and Graded artist of Doordarshan, Sindhu had her initial training in different classical dance styles ; Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattom and Kuchuppudi , from a very young age in Cheruthuruthy, Kerala . She was trained by eminent acharya, Guru Kalamandalam Hyamavathi and later by Guru Kalamandalam Sujatha. She had also been trained in Kathakali by Guru Kalamandalam John ,during her childhood. After her marriage, she moved to Chennai and had the privilege of being under the expert tutelage of Guru Padma Shri Chitra Visweswaran. In the next seven years, she was part of her Guru’s group productions and have also performed extensively in several prestigious sabhas in Chennai.


Sindhu is now attending the mentorship sessions by Guru. Vaibhav Arekar, Mumbai. She also takes guidance from Guru Dr. Sasirekha Raammohan (Founder of Kanagasabhai School of Bharathanatyam).


Sindhu has performed solo kucheries, group presentations in many prestigious Sabhas in Chennai and also in Natyanjali festivals across several temples . She has also travelled to Paris and Singapore for various performances. She is a member of ABHAI and PRAYATHNAM. She has been honoured with the tiltles Kalathilakam, Nipuna Narthaki and Noopura Kalaarathna .

Thirteen years back Sindhu founded ‘Kalaasindhu School of Bharathanatyam’, as a humble effort to share her learnings to the younger generation. Sindhu has been part of many corporate shows from her early days and

still continues to perform across India and abroad


Uma Nambudripad Sathya Narayanan, an acclaimed Bharatanatyam artist and a prime disciple of legendary danseuse, choreographer and Acharya Smt. Chitra Visweswaran. Uma is a recipient of the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, instituted by the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. She is a trained Carnatic Vocalist having taken advanced training under Sri R Visweswaran - especially in singing for natya. She has received the Kerala Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 2019. She is adept at nattuvangam. A senior faculty member of Chidambaram Academy of Performing Arts (founded by Guru Smt. Chitra Visweswaran and her husband, Sri R. Visweswaran), she also heads Vishuddhi Arts.


In her professional repertoire of disciplines is also theatre, where Uma has worked and performed alongside theatre greats, such as Gowri Ramnarayanan and V Balakrishnan. She has composed music for her own dance productions. She is an empaneled artist with the ICCR. She is also a graded artist for dance with Doordarshan, Chennai. She regularly conducts performances and lecture demonstrations for SPICMACAY. She is an executive committee member of Abhai ( Assilociation of Bharatanatyam Artists of India). A noted soloist, she has travelled widely all over India as well as abroad for performances and workshops.


TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

  1. Outside food is not allowed.
  2. A small platform fee maybe charged during purchase of tickets by AllEvents.in.
  3. Footwear to be left in designated area in a neat and orderly fashion.
  4. Any unsanitary behaviour (unflushed toilet soiled tissues on restroom counter wet floors and walls spillage on carpet flooring etc.) will not be tolerated and is subject to a fine to be stipulated by the management which is proportion to the tangible and intangible cost of damages.
  5. Management takes no responsibility for damage loss or theft of any personal belongings.
  6. *Valet parking is available only during events/programs run at the Centre. Street parking is available in adjacent streets during non-event days.
  7. Tickets are non-refundable.
  8. In the case of an accident or unfortunate incident causing damage or loss of property to the Centre the perpetrator(s) will bear the cost of repair and replacement and will barred from entering for a 90 day period.
  9. No drugs alcohol or soliciting is permitted within the Centre's premises. If violated the required action(s) will be taken and a permanent ban will be placed on entry.
  10. Any and all discrimination will not be tolerated under any circumstances. If violated, the offender will be dealt with accordingly and barred from entering for a period determined by the management.
