DANCE

Bookended by Mel Bonis’ playful and Maurice Ravel’s manic takes on the buoyant Viennese waltz, DANCE is a celebration of emotional groove and movement. Thomas Adès offers a contemporary reworking of Frédéric Chopin’s beloved Polish mazurka, while Charli xcx remixes the iconic “360” into the hyperactive “365” on her latest album, BRAT. Modest Mussorgsky and Heitor Villa-Lobos set tragic scenes for dancing in solitude on the Russian “Trepak” and the Brazilian “Valsa da dor.” Florence Price explores the rich history of African-American dance rhythms in her solo piano suite, Dances in The Canebrakes, and Béla Bartók integrates Hungarian folk dances into his vivid Contrasts, a suite that highlights the unique ensemble of piano, violin, and clarinet.
