During our 2024 Fest-o-Matic series – our crazy run of 32 shows over 13 nights that coincided with the New Orleans Jazzfest – we had the pleasure of featuring the legendary songwriters Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham for a sold-out evening of songs and stories. Everyone who was at that show can attest that it was the greatest showcase of songwriting that anyone witnessed that week. And how could it not be with the songs the two of them have written? Spooner was not available to join for this return performance because he is being inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame on the same weekend (along with James Carr and Wilson Pickett among others), but Dan wanted to come back to New Orleans and play for us again so we are thrilled to welcome him back!
Dan Penn is quite possibly the greatest writer in the history of soul music. He has written so many hits that it is hard to comprehend. The Dark End of the Street performed by James Carr – maybe the best soul song ever written? Do Right Woman, Do Right Man performed by Aretha. I’m Your Puppet performed by Bobby Purify and others. He produced the huge hit The Letter by the Box Tops (fronted by longtime New Orleanian Alex Chilton). The list goes on and on. It is truly incredible. And he is a wonderful performer as well.
