The 2025 Freshers trip to Daly's Clearing hut will be the first overnight trip for trimester A. This is a great opportunity to get outdoors, get to know others in the club and test out overnight gear.There are two ways we can get to this hut. Either by tramping in from Dickeys flat which will take 4-5 hours and includes a small river crossing and gaining 500m in elevation. There is a shorter option also which includes 1.5 -2.5 hrs which follows the Waitawheta river upstream before gaining 200m of elevation before reaching the hut.
We will be leaving the University at 9.15 am on Saturday 22 of March from Gate 1, near the Student Health Centre (usual place). We will split into two groups depending what track you want to do and it will be a 1.5 hr drive to the track start from there. We will return back to the vans via the same track on Sunday before driving back to University and we will be back in Hamilton by 6pm at the latest. If you are from Tauranga we will try and sort out transport if possible.
There is the option of either camping or staying in the hut. Dalys Clearing hut is one of many standard huts that are located throughout New Zealand. It has 16 bunks and has mattresses but you will need to bring your own sleeping bags and food. Bookings are not required for this hut. It is first come, first served so we recommend you take a tent in case there are others in the hut.
Trip costs will be around $25 if you tent, or $35 if you stay in the hut, this will need to be paid before the trip by Monday the 17th of March. If the hut is full and you end up tenting we will refund you the $10.
This is an introduction trip to overnighters so we will have a compulsory gear check meeting to check everyone's gear the week before. This will be confirmed closer to the trip via email. If you don't have the right gear on Saturday morning unfortunately you won't be able to come. Info on gear is below and please get in touch if you have any questions or can't make the gear night.
