About this Event
Join us on Friday, November 22 at Apprentice Creative Space at 7pm as we go through an exercise inspired by Maurice Sendak* where we will listen to songs (mostly classical pieces, expect some surprises though) and illustrate sequentially what the music brings to mind.
Bring your sketchbook, iPad, pens, charcoals, watercolors, or any other media of choice. If you need supplies we’ll have some available, don’t let that stop you!
Bring snacks and drinks to share… this includes leftover Halloween candy 👀

*On Maurice Sendak: I spent some time last month in Colorado, and while I was there had the chance to visit the exhibit of his work currently on display at the Denver Art Museum.
Of course seeing his sketchbooks and the exercises he went through was inspiring as someone never not looking for new creative exercises.
But learning more about him as a person, an artist, and someone who experienced vast amounts of existential pain in their life was much more affecting.
Like: he was born in 1928 to Jewish-Polish parents who had immigrated to New York, and he lost much of his extended family in the Holocaust. And also: he was a gay man who lived the 80s and 90s, and lost much of his community to the AIDS epidemic.
He lived through — and was personally impacted by — two monstrous tragedies and still showed up every day to make art, because for him there was no other way. He worked through the pain and the grief by illustrating books, and in turn has helped millions of readers feel less alone.
As we look ahead at how to deal with the next four years, making art and sharing art will always be something in which we can find solace.
