Dacre Hall is located within the grounds of the 12th century Lanercost Priory, and is believed to be the oldest village hall in England. Engravings on some of the stone buildings suggest it was built using parts of the nearby Hadrian’s Wall.The buildings themselves were home to many of the monks that were based at the priory. Lanercost has a checkered history - it has been attacked by a Scottish army, and was even temporarily used as the royal house for England when King Edward I lived here for 5 months after falling seriously ill whilst up north.
The buildings here have many ghost stories that were well documented, in particular, the 1800s, that are echos from the past. There are many important graves and tombs at the site, including members of the Dacre family whom lived at the hall, as well as Earls and Countesses of the Earl family.
