MEETING POINT at the Cemetery Chapel
Stratford upon Avon and its environs were the site of military training camps, hospitals, airbases, and prisoner of war camps during both World Wars. Accidents, wounds and illness, as well as enemy action, took its grim toll on service men and women from the many nations serving in the Stratford area. A walk around the municipal cemetery of Stratford perfectly illustrates this international sacrifice made in both World Wars. Gravestones of men from Canada, Germany, Australia, USA, Italy, New Zealand and Czechoslovakia lie alongside others who hail from every corner of the UK. There are 144 casualties within a dedicated CWGC plot of regimented Portland stone, a further 29 are scattered amongst the sprawling civilian cemetery. The tour will tell the stories of many of these casualties and how they came to rest in this ‘quiet’ corner of England.
There is parking on-site and nearby. There are no facilities or toilets. There is level ground so there is wheelchair access, although it will be on grass.
Car park is located in the middle of cemetery, access gained through main gate entrance.
Please come dressed for the weather and in a suitable footwear.
The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to actively engage all communities with the work of the CWGC by telling the inspiring stories through education and outreach projects.
The CWGF is an independent charity registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (1171947) and Scotland (SC051982).
