About this Event

Join the Commonwealth War Graves Commision for an ANZAC Day tour at Brookwood Military Cemetery, led by one of our volunteers.

Brookwood Military Cemetery, is the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) site in the United Kingdom, covering approximately 37 acres.

Our tours are free to the public, but if you would like to support us then please consider donating to our charity The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF).

MEETING POINT: Canada Building. This is the building just beyond the gates as you enter from Dawney Hill.

CWGC Brookwood Military Cemetery is not to be confused with Brookwood Cemetery. Google Maps provides the most accurate directions to the site.

This tour will take place on the 111th anniversary of troops, including those from Australia and New Zealand, landing on the peninsula of Gallipoli. The plan was to take Turkey out of the war, but they were met with fierce resistance and eventually evacuated in January 1916. This event is commemorated in both Australia and New Zealand with dawn services in both countries and elsewhere, including the UK. This tour will highlight some of the men from Australia and New Zealand who died in the UK and are buried at Brookwood. A total of 351 Australian and 148 New Zealanders from the 1914-18 war are buried at Brookwood.

The tour last approx. 90mins and covers about 1500 meters on grass with some uneven ground.

Please come dressed for the weather and wear suitable footwear.

There is access to a toilet but there are no other facilities, so please bring water if required.

Brookwood Military Cemetery can only be accessed by vehicle via the entrance off Dawney Hill. Limited parking is available outside the Canada building or down a road to the right of the entrance.

There is a direct train service from Waterloo to Brookwood Station from which there is an entrance to the cemetery. You will need to allow 10-15 minutes to walk from the station to the meeting point.

Please note there can be last minute cancellations. This can be due to various reasons including illness, site issues and weather. We will email you as soon as we can but this could include the morning of the tour, so please check your emails prior to leaving for the tour.

The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to actively engage all communities with the work of the CWGC by telling the inspiring stories through education and outreach projects.

The CWGF is an independent charity registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (1171947) and Scotland (SC051982).
