For the 93rd concert produced by The Unwrinkled Ear, we welcome a first-time meeting of legendary local talent and solos by two traveling musicians with deep oeuvres and long visions for how strongly music can affect us.
CuZns (Bobby Bradford and William Roper) + Jeff Parker
Will Guthrie solo
Kelsey Mines solo
There is no duo in LA with as wide a range as CuZns (Bobby Bradford and William Roper.) They swing, they improvise, they actively involve the audience in discussions both political and quotidian. Their music rests at the vital center where time meets how and why. For the first time ever, they will be joined by Jeff Parker, a guitarist who has been mesmerizing me with unexpected tranquilities and rousing anthems since our shared time in the Chicago of the 90s.
Will Guthrie has velocity. His drumming makes me think of a steam engine: volcanic within, propulsion at heart, taking you for a ride. His first ever solo show in Los Angeles.
Kelsey Mines’ music instantly gives me that flutter of awe that makes me appreciate radical new voices that are committed to a personal sound. She pushes herself and it pulls you in. Also Mines’ first ever solo show in Los Angeles.

Cornet player Bobby Bradford is one of L.A.'s supreme elders of improvised music, leading his own groups as well as having played with Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, David Murray, John Carter, Vinny Golia and Charlie Haden. Since 1991, Bradford has fronted his own ensemble, the Mo’Tet. He is a former instructor at Pasadena City College and Pomona College.
William Roper is a multidisciplinary artist who plays tuba and other instruments, in musical environments from orchestras to small free improvising ensembles. He has toured the world as both a soloist and an ensemble player, and been featured on over 60 recordings.
They are both founding members of the trio Purple Gums (with Francis Wong) and the quartet The Obihiro Cowboys (with Michael Vlatkovich and Joseph Mitchell).
Jeff Parker is recognized as one of contemporary music’s most versatile and innovative electric guitarists and composers. With a prolific output characterized by musical ideas of angularity and logic, he works in a wide variety of mediums - from pop, rock and jazz to new music - using ideas informed by innovations and trends in both popular and experimental forms. He creates works that explore and exploit the contrary relationships between tradition and technology, improvisation and composition, and the familiar and the abstract.
His sonic palette may employ techniques from sample-based technologies, analog and digital synthesis, and conventional and extended techniques from over 40 years of playing the guitar.
An integral part of what has become known as “The Modern Chicago Sound”, he is a longtime member of the influential indie band Tortoise, and is also a founding member of Isotope 217˚ and Chicago Underground. A look at his extensive work as a collaborator and session musician offers a glimpse into Mr. Parker’s diversity. This list includes: Andrew Bird, Meshell Ndegeocello, Joshua Redman, Toumani Diabate, George Lewis, Bennie Maupin, Nicole Mitchell, and hundreds of other top-tier msucial talents.
An associate member of Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1995, Parker was awarded the United States Artist’s Fellowship in 2022.
Will Guthrie started in jazz then took a long detour away from the drum kit through junk electronics, extreme amplification and electro-acoustic techniques, documented on a series of solo and collaborative recordings released on exquisite labels like Black Truffle, Editions Mego, Erstwhile, Ipecac and Clean Feed. Alongside continuing his electro-acoustic work, in the last decade, Guthrie has returned to the drums with a vengeance, developing a series of solo works marked by a radical single-mindedness, from relentless rhythmic workouts to earth-quaking explorations of the bass frequencies of gongs and other metal percussion instruments. Guthrie’s work is distinguished from the delicately pointillist approach of many European improvisers by his rhythmic sophistication, unashamed virtuosity and undeniable physicality, touching on aspects of world musics from Javanese gamelan to South Indian Carnatic music.
Regular collaborators include Oren Ambarchi, Sarah Hennies, Mark Fell, Roscoe Mitchell, James Rushford, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Jérôme Noetinger, Keith Rowe, Ava Mendoza, the film maker Hangjun Lee and choreographer/dancer Mette Ingvartsen.
Kelse Mines is a bassist, vocalist and composer that premiers new original music that seeks to intersect activism, community and art. Born and raised in Seattle, Kelsey grew up on the music made in the Pacific Northwest. A recipient of the Holland Scholarship, Kelsey followed her passion for the double bass to the Netherlands, before returning to Seattle where she has fully established herself as an important voice in the scene as both a performer and educator.
